The (new) Largest Jigsaw Puzzle Ever

Previously, the largest jigsaw puzzle in recorded history was made by Educa, called LIFE: The Greatest Puzzle with 24,000 pieces. The puzzle came in four packets, breaking the puzzle art up into four slightly easier to manage sections, which all connect together to create a giant puzzle that is 14 feet long and 5 feet tall. A TRUE puzzle challenge, and certainly not for the faint of heart.

But the folks at Ravensburger wanted to take things up a notch and create a puzzle even larger than LIFE! They have passed up Educa and made Double Retrospect, now the biggest puzzle ever, with 32,256 pieces. This mammoth of a jigsaw puzzle measures an incredible 17 feet x 6 feet!

The art for Ravensburger’s Double Retrospect was created by American Artist Keith Haring (1958-1990). Each of the 32 different images show one of Haring’s quirky illustrations, inspired by the cartooning skills he learned from his father, according to Ravensburger’s website. The puzzle is very colorful and vibrant and each scene will make you smile or chuckle. The limited color palate also makes the puzzle even more challenging because it will be harder to separate the pieces that go in one scene from another.

The puzzle pieces arrive in 8 separate bags inside of a box, and a trolley is also supplied so that you can transport the giant puzzle home. When you open the box, each bag will contain 4,032 pieces – each a sure-fire challenge on their own.

Choosing a jigsaw puzzle can prove to be a difficult task, especially if you intend to use it as a gift. There are some things that you should think about before doing it that can make your job a lot easier. Today, we will discuss the number of pieces, which is probably one of the most important features of today’s puzzle.

If we look at the jigsaw puzzle market, we can identify a certain trend that is also visible in the Western society at large. Breaking records and expanding our own limits has become socially desirable, and this is easy to observe when it comes to jigsaw puzzles. If you take a look at the biggest puzzle companies, you will see that almost every one of them tries to break the world record for the biggest jigsaw puzzle. And if they don’t, they certainly don’t fall too far behind. Bigger Than Life

Jigsaw puzzles are always challenging. And even if some are more challenging than others, assembling a jigsaw puzzle has never been an easy task. For those who like big challenges and don’t easily give up, puzzle makers are constantly trying to make it harder, by creating larger and more difficult puzzles. A couple of months ago, the biggest jigsaw puzzle you could find on the market was Life, the Greatest Puzzle, a 24,000-piece marvel.

Educa, the Spanish manufacturer behind this huge puzzle, asked Royce B. McClure to design it. The artist combined images from some of his previous paintings in order to make the puzzle challenging and attractive, and the result took thousands of hours of work. Once you complete it, you can use it to decorate any wall in the house due to its amazing 428 x 157 cm breadth.

Today, Life doesn’t look so big anymore. And that’s because Ravensburger created something bigger than Life: a 32,256 pieces jigsaw puzzle, part of the special series called Keith Harring. The Double Retrospect weighs 57,056 pounds and measures an impressive 544 x 192 cm. Since September 2010, it is the official record holder.

But if you look at the image, you have to appreciate Life more than Double Retrospect. The details on the image look great even on the full scale jigsaw puzzle, not only on the box, and the assembling is a lot more challenging due to the richness of the image and the intricacy of the details. While Double Retrospect looks good enough and is the new biggest jigsaw puzzle, it is an assembly of 32 smaller images, like a filmstrip, rather than one large continuous image.
