New Jigsaw Puzzle App from Ravensburger Digital

Got an empty schedule this Saturday and finished all your jigsaw puzzles lying around? Well, now there’s something out there that will let you keep puzzling while you wait for a new order in the mail or until you’re ready to trek over to the store. The new Ravensburger Puzzle App is $2.99 on the iTunes store. Designed specifically for the iPad, this app lets you do jigsaw puzzles from the comfort of your couch. You won’t have to bend over the craft table, worry about the glare on the pieces, or shoo the cat away so he doesn’t ruin your hard-sorted puzzle pieces. You can complete this puzzles from anywhere with a WiFi connection–that’s great for those people that want to wind down in the coziness of their bed just before going to sleep!

With your $2.99 purchase you’ll get six puzzles to choose from, three tutorials, relaxing background music, and eight table themes. You’ll get to keep track of your achievements and leaderboards via Game Center, and the best part of all–you get the freedom of choosing your piece count!

From 20 to 500 pieces, you get to make the choice that’s best for you. No longer do you have to eye a puzzle with a great image but wish it came in the right piece count! Now you can make it happen with the click of a button.

The in-app puzzling should come naturally to those that love jigsaw puzzles. The pieces will be scattered randomly over the screen, and there will be a drop-bar tray for safekeeping of those pieces you want to save for later (you’ll never be able to lose a piece again!). There will be a snap sound alert when you’ve fit a piece into the correct spot by moving and rotating, and a handy image as a reference that you can place for your convenience.

Don’t like the six puzzles offered with the initial purchase price or itching to the perfect puzzle for your iPad? The app also comes with a built-in library where you can purchase more puzzles for an additional fee and search by theme or release date.

This is the perfect solution for people without a lot of space to do their puzzles or people that just love their iPad! Stay tuned–next week we’ll post our own official review of the app!

End of Life Puzzles Means Deals for You!

While we have new releases all year long for all the puzzle fanatics out there, the first few months of each year are by far the busiest! Puzzle Warehouse has a huge influx of new items because manufacturers have just come out with 2013 catalogs, and boy are those fun to browse!

With this new offering of puzzles, there’s also a downside. Some puzzles have to stop being made so that new ones can live! These are End of Life puzzles, also called retired or discontinued, but basically puzzles that aren’t going to be re-stocked because the manufacturer is no longer producing them.

However, there is some good news in it for you, the puzzle aficionado: we have a ton of sales!

So, this is it – your last chance for these sweet puzzles.  After we sell out, you will have to scour eBay to get your hands on one. Here’s our favorite end-of-lifers that are on sale for less than $20 – a bunch of lovely puzzles that you might want to snatch up quick — before it’s too late!*

How to Pick the Best Puzzle Brands

So, we’ve posted before on how to select a high-quality puzzle based on the brand and the quality of the puzzle pieces and printing. But I wanted to give you a little more insight into what makes each of our most popular brands unique. We’ll also take a look at quality and prices.

This is to give you all some insight into each brand we carry, starting with the most popular puzzle brands. I have tested many of the jigsaw puzzles myself and have also talked with many people who love these puzzles! More will be posted later.

Sunsout:

This brand carries thousands of different images, in piece counts ranging from 100 piece mini puzzles to 6000 piece giants. They are made from eco-friendly material in the USA. Sunsout puzzles are also on the cheaper side – with 1000 piece puzzles only $15. Pieces are both ribbon and random cut, depending on the image.

Ravensburger:

Often touted as one of the best puzzle brands, it is probably true. These puzzles have true interlocking ribbon cut pieces – they really snap together well and don’t move around. They also use grained paper which makes the image glare-free with a nice, durable finish and great color. These puzzles are perfect for framing. Their 1000 piece puzzles are $17, and they also have great 500 piece puzzles for only $13.

Springbok:

These puzzles are known for the fact that no two pieces are ever the same. They use random cut dies to cut their puzzle, a unique look and interesting challenge. They use 100% recycled materials and are made in the USA. They also limit the number of new puzzles each year in an effort to focus more on quality than quantity. 500 piece puzzles from Springbok are just $12.

Heye:

Heye puzzles have some of the most unique images – from gothic art to highly detailed cartoon puzzles. The pieces are ribbon cut and slide together nicely – but be careful – often times with ribbon cut puzzles pieces of similar shape and color can make it to the wrong spot. Make sure it really fits before moving on! These are top-notch quality – with 1000 piece puzzles upwards of $25 – but they are well worth it if you plan to keep and frame the puzzle. (I myself have 3 mounted on my wall from Heye!)

Aquarius:

If you’re into pop-culture, this is the brand for you. They have everything from vintage Beatles puzzles to I Love Lucy, John Wayne and Rush. Their puzzles are also printed with high-quality ink so the images are bright and crystal clear. These are the perfect puzzles for teenagers or fanatics with 1000 piece puzzles around $15.

Ceaco:

This brand is known for its low prices. You’ll find a smaller box and slightly thinner pieces than a higher-end puzzle, but the fun is still the same! These are great party puzzles or for keeping and doing over and over with the kids or family. 1000 piece puzzles are only $12 and they have great painters like Thomas Kinkade!

New Species Discovered: The Lesula Monkey

There is officially a new species of monkey that has been named, though the Lesula Monkey has been long familiar animal to the locals of its central African habitat in the lowland forests of the Congo.

A team of scientists has been investigating the species since June 2007 and have now given it the binomial Cercopithecus lomamiensis. It was discovered when researchers found a lesula monkey that was the pet of a school director’s daughter.

The lesula resembles an owl-faced monkey, but is easily distinguishable by its variations in color, its significantly larger incisors and second molars. They have since proven that the owl-monkey and the lesula are close relatives but genetically distinct, most likely separated geographically by a river that led to the differences between the two species.

This is only the second discovery of a new monkey species in 28 years, but it reminds us that there are still areas of earth to be explored and things to be found.

If this has triggered your fondness of monkeys, here are a few of our puzzles which feature monkeys and apes. We also have a huge selection of jungle animal puzzles for you to enjoy!

The (new) Largest Jigsaw Puzzle Ever

Previously, the largest jigsaw puzzle in recorded history was made by Educa, called LIFE: The Greatest Puzzle with 24,000 pieces. The puzzle came in four packets, breaking the puzzle art up into four slightly easier to manage sections, which all connect together to create a giant puzzle that is 14 feet long and 5 feet tall. A TRUE puzzle challenge, and certainly not for the faint of heart.

But the folks at Ravensburger wanted to take things up a notch and create a puzzle even larger than LIFE! They have passed up Educa and made Double Retrospect, now the biggest puzzle ever, with 32,256 pieces. This mammoth of a jigsaw puzzle measures an incredible 17 feet x 6 feet!

The art for Ravensburger’s Double Retrospect was created by American Artist Keith Haring (1958-1990). Each of the 32 different images show one of Haring’s quirky illustrations, inspired by the cartooning skills he learned from his father, according to Ravensburger’s website. The puzzle is very colorful and vibrant and each scene will make you smile or chuckle. The limited color palate also makes the puzzle even more challenging because it will be harder to separate the pieces that go in one scene from another.

The puzzle pieces arrive in 8 separate bags inside of a box, and a trolley is also supplied so that you can transport the giant puzzle home. When you open the box, each bag will contain 4,032 pieces – each a sure-fire challenge on their own.
