Holiday Puzzle Series #3: Cardinals in Winter

Wondering why the cardinal makes such a big appearance in our snowy winter puzzles? Well, the cardinal is a bird that doesn’t migrate and doesn’t molt during the winter; it keeps those bright red attention-drawing feathers all year long, making them stand out especially against the white backdrop. Some say the cardinal’s coloring and conspicuousness makes it the bird most responsible for getting people into bird watching, being the first bird that strikes them to open up the bird field guide.

For some symbolic meanings of the cardinal, visit The Cardinal Experience. Cardinals are special birds—they can symbolize a myriad of things, from vitality, faith and power to cycles of life, death, and renewal!

Origin of Christmas Trees

It’s the time of year for that fresh pine smell to cozy up your living room! If you are a family that decorates a tree, you might also enjoy these puzzles that feature big, bright, and beautiful Christmas Trees!

Do you know the origin of the Christmas tree?

The modern fir Christmas tree actually originated from Germany nearly 1,000 years ago. It’s said that St. Boniface, the one credited with bringing Christianity to Germany, came across a group of pagans that were worshipping an oak tree, and, angrily, St. Boniface struck down the oak tree only for a fir tree to spring up from the roots of the oak tree! From there, St. Boniface took the fir tree as a sign of Christianity, though it wasn’t until the 16th century that trees were brought in the house to be decorated for the Christmas tradition. This tradition is said to have started with Martin Luther, who found a snow-speckled tree so beautiful that he took it inside to light candles in honor of Jesus’s birth.
