Great article: Jigsaw puzzles a tool for healing

A 77-year old woman completed more than 60 jigsaw puzzles – which are now displayed in an assisted living community – as part of her recovery from suffering a severe stroke on Thanksgiving 2010. This article is a heartwarming tale that gets to the heart of what we’re all about here at the Puzzle Warehouse: family, fun, and keeping a sharp mind. Read the full article here.

New Christmas Room!

Last month, we celebrated our 1st anniversary being open to the public, and boy has it been a ride! A year later, we’re facing our second holiday season and are very excited to offer you – our valued customers – more than 12,000 puzzles and games to choose from in our store here in St. Louis and online at PuzzleWarehouse.com.
And Something New: we now have an entire Christmas room full of more than 300 holiday-themed jigsaw puzzles from 10 to 1500 pieces. Here are a few of our favorites.

1. The Twelve Days of Christmas

The Celtic Collection of puzzles contains original and vivid artwork created by Dublin born artist Rachel Arbuckle. This is a stunning interpretation of the classic Christmas song. Purrfect Puzzles are made in The Netherlands to the highest quality, using recycled materials, in a compact ‘Eco Box’. The well-fitting pieces are varied, glare-free, durable and thicker than usual pieces.

2. Christmas Puzzleballs

These 3D puzzles by Ravensburger are a hit every holiday season! Turn this Christmas into a life-long memory by building your very own Puzzleball ornaments! Each Puzzleball has 60 interlocking pieces that come together to form a holiday scene ornament that can be hung on the tree with included nylon string. We have several non-Christmas theme puzzle balls for year-round puzzling fun, too.

3. Puzzles to Remember – Poinsettia & Pine Cones

A holiday favorite, the poinsettia, comes to life as you put together this vivid jigsaw puzzle. The Puzzles to Remember series by Springbok is a fun way to enjoy puzzling while minimizing the time it takes to piece together. These puzzles are the same finished size as standard 500-piece puzzles, but contain only 12 or 36 large pieces, making it much easier to finish. There are more than 10 puzzles in this series.

4. Pintoo’s plastic puzzles

As the only carrier in the USA of these unique puzzles, Puzzle Warehouse is excited to bring you a collection of puzzles that feature long-lasting, interlocking plastic pieces. These puzzles do not require glue after assembled (they can be hung right up) and offer greater flexibility and presentability than traditional jigsaw puzzles. Pintoo offers more than 120 images in puzzles ranging from 40 to 1000 pieces, 3D, and Miniatures!

How to choose a jigsaw puzzle: Finding the perfect theme

When you enter Puzzle Warehouse, you find yourself wondering where to start. Not that we’re not organized, on the contrary. But you should never forget that this is the biggest jigsaw puzzle store in the world. Thousands of puzzles are waiting to be discovered and assembled, and if you want to look at everything there is on the list, it can take a lifetime (we are constantly updating our stock and acquiring new items) until you finally reach the last item.

We spoke in our last post about one of the difficulties encountered when choosing a jigsaw puzzle. We only covered the number of pieces, but there are many other aspects left. What theme should you choose? If there were only ten puzzles in the world, the question wouldn’t have much sense. But this is not the case, and you can certainly find jigsaw puzzles depicting the most insane things.

How do you choose, in that case? Whether it’s a gift for yourself or for someone else, you should ask yourself something simple: does the person you’re buying it for have any passions or hobbies? If they do, the choice becomes a lot easier. You look for a jigsaw puzzle theme that has something to do with that interest. Maybe your niece loves horses, or your father is a die-hard Cardinals fan. This theme strategy can never fail.

If they don’t have any particular passions, or if you don’t know anything about what they like, there is still hope. Go for a theme everybody likes: either a reproduction of a work of art or a beautiful landscape. Or, choose something unique that they haven’t seen before, like the Impossibles. Since you have the choice, this is the best way to make even the toughest crowd like your gift.

Chocolate Sweethearts, a Jigsaw Puzzle Valentine

We haven’t met anyone yet who doesn’t like chocolate. We can eat it just to delight our senses or maybe to prevent cardiovascular diseases, as doctors recommend.

Its soft texture, its variety of flavors (spicy, bitter, sweet, refreshing, exotic), its multitude of shapes and not to mention the solid history behind it—it all comes together to make chocolate the next indispensable ingredient after oxygen and water. If you are not convinced of its benefits yet, here is an example: why do you think people feel the need for “something sweet” – which is usually chocolate or chocolate ice cream – whenever they are depressed? Well, the answer is quite obvious: chocolate raises the brain’s serotonin levels.

Chocolate isn’t always a comfort food, though. It is also traditionally a gift for your sweetheart or other people close to your heart on Valentine’s Day. If your sweetheart happens to be on a diet, and you don’t want to risk her wrath by giving her the real thing, perhaps a jigsaw puzzle Valentine is just the thing.

You may find the Chocolate Sweethearts 350 pieces jigsaw puzzle a lovely way to spend the day with your children or sweetheart. Made by Springbok, from 100% recycled materials, the quality of the puzzle guarantees that you will like it even more. This little piece of chocolate heaven will never expire and it will not make you gain any extra pounds, no matter how much you use it. It makes the perfect jigsaw puzzle Valentine, and if you really want to know the best thing about it, we will tell you: at PuzzleWarehouse, chocolate comes cheap.

Create Your Own Puzzle

Though it is possible, we are not going to talk today about how to create a puzzle of your own from scratch. Instead, we’d like to introduce you to a customizable puzzle. Made by Cobble Hill, these create your own jigsaw puzzles can turn into anything you want. Or, more importantly, into anything your kids want. The pack of colorful crayons that go with it was designed to let children’s imaginations flow freely and practice their creativity.

As a parent, you can help them come up with an idea for the puzzle, and perhaps even help with its drawing. Then, assembling can turn into a wonderful activity that you can share with your family. If you need a gift for their grandparents, there’s nothing better than Cobble Hill’s “Create Your Own Puzzle.” It will give your children the opportunity to express themselves and create something original, with their own hands. And, you must already know it, there’s no better gift than the one that comes from the heart; especially when the one offering it is a young member of your family.

Drawing is one of the childhood joys that can rarely keep up with age. So why not make it last, and let your children enjoy drawing and being creative as much as they can. If you don’t do it, you might regret it later. What if you were the parent of the next Picasso or Van Gogh? Would you dare and try to put an end to their talent, depriving the world of an artist who could inspire millions?

Go to Puzzle Warehouse and get your children the “Create Your Own Puzzle” jigsaw puzzle. They come in 20 or 70-piece puzzles, 12-piece postcard puzzles or a 36-piece floor puzzle. When the work of art is complete, send us a photo of your child’s creation!
